  • An Oxford University study indicates sick and injured chimpanzees self-medicate by eating medicinal plants and rubbing on their wounds.  Here's what we know:
  • Lab tests done on the chimps' medicinal plants indicate the vast majority of them are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
  • Researchers say watching the chimps will help us discover new medicines of the future
  • Scientists admit the chimps know the forest better than we do
  • Apparently, the chimps know which plants help them get better
  • In one study they tracked a chimp with an injured hand travel extensively to find and eat a fern, which turned out to be anti-inflammatory and reduced pain and swelling
  • Scientists believe this high-level knowledge of medicinal plant benefits is socially learned and could lead to benefits for humans
  • Soon we may be hearing..."Dr. Chimp will see you now."
