Speeder - A New Form of Travel
In the UK, a flying motorcycle, named Speeder, that can fly at speeds of 300 mph and carry two people or cargo, has just cleared flight testing and is available for pre-order. The vehicle has been developed by Jetpack Aviation, which is famous for its jet pack personal flying technologies. The vehicle is jet turbine powered and will cost in excess of $380,000. Jetpack plans to offer the vehicle with different types of frames and propulsion system for different customers and uses, emphasizing the versatility of this new travel technology.
VTOL
Speeder is a VTOL - a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. It is small enough to be transported in a trailer. The company says it is designed both as a mission critical vehicle for medical teams, police, fire and rescue operations and as a luxury flying machine for the adventuresome.
California Testing
Jetpack Aviation's Prototype P1 was tested in southern California while on a tether. The test vehicle has an aluminum chassis. It passed a number of flight benchmarks including takeoff, climb, hovering, yaw and slow moves into forward flight.
Tech Specs
Speeder can reach an altitude of 15,000 feet. With cargo onboard, an autonomous Speeder can hit speeds of 300 mph. With a pilot operating the vehicle, speeds are lower to allow the pilot to clearly see and easily breathe. The company says the vehicle doesn't need a charge before takeoff and requires very little prep time - "You just hop in and fly". Jetpack Aviation is working on a next generation version of Speeder. P1.5 will be a bit smaller than P1 and will have carbon fiber body panels. Speeder is a new version of the future of travel.
