Autonomous Car That Changes Sizes With Driving Mode
Luxury car maker Audi's new EV roadster concept Skysphere redefines the future of what a car can be. Skysphere is sleek, autonomous and electric, with a digital cockpit, retractable steering wheel and incredibly it can change sizes based on the driving mode. The range for Skysphere is 310 miles. Audi, which is owned by Volkswagen, says the vehicle represents what Audi believes it can achieve as it transitions to electric and autonomous vehicles in the second half of the decade. Besides its highly advanced new technologies, Skysphere represents a new design direction for Audi and for travel. It's a fascinating vision of the future of driving.
"Two Vehicles in One"
Audi calls the Skysphere "two vehicles in one". The first is an electric sports car that accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds. The EV has 553 pound feet of torque. Also contained in Skysphere is a second vehicle - a grand touring coach that expands 10 inches for a larger, more comfortable cabin when it goes into self-driving mode. Audi says the concept shows them what is possible when combining a driving and digital experience that is driver/passenger centric.
Coming Spheres and EV's
Skysphere is a first in Audi's series of sphere concepts that emphasize the interior experience for the driver and passengers. Upcoming spheres to be unveiled include Grandsphere and Urbansphere. Audi plans to exclusively offer EV's starting in 2033. Its last new, internal combustion engine vehicle will be introduced in 2026. Audi's Skysphere is pointing toward a brand new direction in the development of electric and autonomous vehicles for upcoming years.
