Using the physics of ocean crossing sea birds, a team of developers at RDC Aqualines of Singapore have created a hybrid boat-plane that flies a foot over the water at speeds of 70 mph plus.  The 72 foot, EP-15 uses a cushion of air, known as ground effect, to fly above the water and land on water.  The boat-plane uses a principle of physics that ocean crossing birds use to travel faster, longer and with much less energy expenditure.  When the vehicle reaches an altitude roughly half the length of its wingspan, ground effect produces excess air pressure which provides additional lift for the plane and cuts the downdraft pressures on it. The EP-15 is designed for passenger service and cargo.  There is a smaller model for sports.  The company says these vehicles are zero emissions and designed for clean, green travel.

Tech Specs

The wingspan of EP-15 is 55 feet and technically it could fly 25 feet above the water's surface.  But the published cruising altitude by RDC is a foot.  The boat-plane starts off like a boat, then goes into a hydrofoil mode on a "hydroski" before it takes off at 70 mph.  The vehicle has a 600 horsepower electric hydrogen powertrain that powers three propellers.  Two smaller propellers straddle the nose of the plane and a large propeller is in the rear.  Top speed is 125 mph, cruising speed is 115 mph and the boat-plane has a range of 375 miles.  It can taxi up to a beach along the water's edge using its retractable landing gear.  It is a unique travel vehicle that will be available in the very near future - 2024.
