New Suite of Electric Concepts
Luxury brand Lexus is going electric in a very big way. It has revealed its first all-electric SUV, the RZ 450e. It will roll out in late 2022. Lexus has also unveiled a fleet of all-electric concept vehicles, including a supercar, a big SUV and a sedan. For Lexus, this is the start of their future of electromobility. They have big plans and target selling nothing but electric vehicles in the US, Europe and China by 2030. Lexus says it will be selling only EVs globally by 2035. And by 2030, it plans to be selling 3.5 million EVs a year. With Toyota and Lexus cutting edge technologies, it should be an epic new ride.
RZ
The RZ is a mid-sized SUV in the BEV category or battery electric vehicle. BEVs have to be plugged in to charge the battery which powers the electric motors. Electricity is the only source of power for BEVs. The RZ is Lexus' first EV built on Toyota's e-TNGA all-electric platform. Toyota is the parent company of Lexus. Toyota is investing $70 billion into the development of electric vehicles. The e-TNGA is also being used for the upcoming Toyota bZ4x SUV which will be released in 2022. It has a unique "steer by wire" system which facilitates much more sensitive steering at high speeds and less wheel turning through obstacles. The RZ is expected to be available in Europe and Japan by the end of 2022. US sales will begin shortly thereafter.
E-Supercar
In the new, electric Lexus lineup, the most dramatic concept is the e-supercar called Lexus Electrified Sport. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in two seconds and has a range of 435 miles on a charge. It has slick and sophisticated styling with a distinctive Z configuration on the sides of the vehicle. Lexus says it has a "totally high-performance" solid state battery. By the way, the Z configuration is a first for Lexus and something all upcoming electric Lexus vehicles will be proudly wearing. It's the symbol of Lexus's epic new ride powered by zero-emissions, electric motors.
