"The Truck For the Masses"
Ford Motor Company has announced that it is more than tripling production volume of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup because of booming demand for the EV. Automotive experts are calling Lightning the most transformative vehicle in the 119 year history of Ford. Unlike its $200,000+ competitor Tesla's Cybertruck, the Lightning is priced at $40,000 and Ford is calling it "the e-pickup for the masses". The EV is at the forefront of Ford's efforts to retool and revitalize their brand into a green vehicle powerhouse. Ford had planned on producing 40,000 Lightnings per year. Because of rapidly escalating demand, they have decided to more than triple production to 150,000 yearly. More than 200,000 customers have ordered the EV. Ford CEO Jim Farley says Lightning will hit showrooms in the next few days.
Ford Engineering
Ford Lightning is a re-engineered electric version of Ford's top selling vehicle, the gas-powered F-150 pickup. The EV has two electric motors and one of two optional battery packs. The Standard Range battery gets 230 miles on a charge. The Extended range gets 320 miles on a charge. The ride is said to be exceptionally smooth. Lightning has enough electrical outlets to power a house for several days or power a construction site. It can even power other EVs. The EV can tow 10,000 pounds. There's a cargo carrying front trunk. It has the all the attributes of an iconic, new, zero emissions pickup truck.
Tesla Competition
Ford leadership is making it clear that their goal is to overtake Tesla as the world leader in electric vehicles. The Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup is a big part of their strategy to overtake Tesla. A second electric pickup is in Ford's planning process. The Ford 2022 Lightning is already sold out. Ford is now taking orders for Ford 2023 Lightnings.
