Sion May Be World's Cheapest Solar Car
Germany' Sono Motors' Sion Solar Car
Priced Just About Right at $25,497
Germany's Sono Motors has a solar-powered SEV that is very close to production. In fact, it is so close, the company says that it will start production in mid-2023 and it can be bought at a price starting at $25,497. The Sono Sion is a unique solar vehicle, and it may be the world's most affordable solar car. There are solar panels on every flat surface of the EV, even on the fenders. Most solar cars have the solar panels just on the roof. The pictures show the production ready version of the SEV (solar electric vehicle) from the updated design. The vehicle is very sleek and has advanced technologies. The Sion is dedicated to "Celebrating the Sun".
German Solar Startup With Lots of Ideas
Sono was founded in the Munich area in 2016 in a garage by two friends Laurin Hahn and Jona Christian. They are diligently working to move the company forward and appear to be hitting stride. Totally focused on solar cars and solar technology, their company's integrated proprietary solar panels on the exterior portions of the Sion SEV generate 70 to 150 miles of range per week just from the Sun. The SEV is a classy, 4-door SUV/minivan with plenty of tech on board, including a smart, linear display on the dashboard.
Tech Specs
This is a hot SEV to watch as it rolls out. Some tech details to note:
- 456 solar half cells integrated on the EV's outer shell
- Range of 70 miles to 152 miles on solar charging per week
- 54 kWh LFP battery that can be recharged in 4 times less the amount of time than other EV battery of similar sizes
- Can provide bidirectional charging to homes, cars and devices at AC outputs up to 11 kWh
