Chicago's Vertiport and Embraer's Eve eVTOLS Are Center Stage
Here's some very exciting news concerning the future of air taxi travel that is getting a lot closer. Chicago is leading the way to the future of travel by air taxi eVTOLs, or electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. Brazilian-based aviation leader Embraer and its Eve eVTOL division will perform their first, flying taxi simulations in North America starting on September 12th and lasting for three weeks in the Windy City. For the simulation of routes, operations, etc., Eve will use traditional helicopters that will give a real-world sense of what it would be like in a big city like Chicago with flying taxi eVTOLs operating as a commuting choice. Vertiport Chicago, which is a ten-acre facility for helicopters, will be a takeoff and landing point for the simulations and wants to have a major eVTOL role in the future.
Value of the Simulations
The 3 weeks of flying taxis simulations in the real world will be a major, global learning experience for the future of flying taxis. In the Chicago market, it will demonstrate to Eve operators, public officials, Chicagoan's, and the commuting public what it would be like to live side-by-side with flying taxis as part of the traffic commuting mix. The testing should demonstrate what general services are needed, what routes will be in greatest demand and what flying taxis companies like Eve will need in terms of support and infrastructure from the city of Chicago to keep operations efficient and safe. We do know that the eVTOLs will be zero emissions and a lot less noisy than the helicopters. But hats off to the city of Chicago for giving this new form of urban air mobility a big try and big advance forward!!
