  • Dozens of the world's leading technologists, including Elon Musk, are calling for a 6-month pause by AI labs in the development of large, powerful AI systems
  • The Open Letter, also signed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak & IBM Chief Scientist Grady Booch, says that new AI systems pose "profound risks to society & humanity"
  • The tech giants say AI labs are locked in an "out-of-control race" to develop even more powerful, digital AI minds, that the creators don't understand, "can't predict or reliably control"
  • If the labs don't self-impose a moratorium, the tech leaders are asking for governments to step in & do so
  • The Open Letter comes shortly after OpenAI GPT-4 (underpinning ChatGPT) was unveiled, with the capacity to pass university exams, draft legal briefs and build a website from a sketch
  • It is ironic & important to know that some of the world's most innovative & visionary tech leaders are calling for a pause in "next big thing" AI innovation to better understand the potential impacts & risks to humanity of the new AI systems
  • This Open Letter, from top tech leaders that I respect, opens up questions of limiting creativity, halting innovations, pulling in government regulators, possibly halting the advance of tech progress & then balancing that against protecting humanity from unexpected, unintended new consequences of new tech ... a challenging new world!  MAK
