MEDICAL MYSTERY: WHY WHALES & ELEPHANTS DON'T GET CANCER
Source: Stock images
- Scientists in the UK are attempting to answer 1 of the biggest medical mysteries: Why don't whales & other large creatures like elephants get cancer like humans do?
- In whales, elephants & other species cancer is extremely rare, while in humans, dogs & cats it is 1 of the biggest killers; in fact, 10 million humans die from it every year
- Researchers from the Sanger Institute in Cambridge & the Zoological Society of London are focusing on the link between cell mutation rates, tumors & aging
- Example of their findings: Bowhead whales live up to 200 years, have extremely low cell mutation rates & nearly no cases of cancer
- Findings indicate that whales, along with elephants, have very low rates of cell mutations & cancer, which is a staggering finding, given the huge numbers of cells they have when compared to humans
- Cancer is known to be caused by DNA in a cell mutating & then dividing uncontrollably triggering a cancerous tumor
- The scientists are expanding their findings to include many species to learn why some species are seemingly immune to cancer
- This is very important cancer research because learning why certain animals like whales are far less susceptible to cancer will provide new knowledge to develop new preventative cancer approaches & therapies for humans.
CURIOSITIES & WONDERS: WORLD'S SHORTEST DOG
- A tiny Chihuahua named Pearl has set the Guinnes World Record for the world's shortest dog
- Pearl is just 3.59" tall and 5" long, making her similar in size to a $1 bill or a small envelop
- Pearl is so Beverly Hills Chihuahua cute, she could take her shortest dog record title right to the bank in new & innovative poses
- As you can see in her Guinnes World Record photo, she has positioned herself as a glam model for big diamond necklaces and luxury heels
- It may be a dog-eat-dog world, but little Pearl, through her ingenuity and creativity, is taking her "Curiosity & Wonders" title to the top
- Although she is shorter than a spoon or a popsicle, her owner says she has plenty of attitude & is "a bit of a Diva" & she sure has set a new record for cute
- She gets a 5-star Paw from my little favorite, Win, seen in her photo shoot B-Day partying.
