PARALYZED MAN WALKS AFTER 12 YEARS
Source: Gert-Jan Oskam
- 40-year-old Gert-Jan Oskam of the Netherlands was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident & hasn't walked for 12 years until now
- Told by doctors that he would never walk again, an experimental program led by neuroscientists in Switzerland has proven the doctors wrong
- With stimulators implanted on his brain & spinal cord, when he thinks about walking, he can walk
- The medical innovation is that the implants re-established communications between the brain and the area of the spinal cord that controls walking
- The technology enables him to walk 100 to 200 meters - the length of 1 or 2 football fields
- Oskram commented that for 12 years he's been trying to get back up on his feet & with the help of the new tech, he just did that
- The new implant approach needs to clear clinical trials and regulatory clearance for stimulator use
- But it is a tremendous breakthrough and the researchers hope it will give many more paralyzed patients & stroke victims the chance to walk again
- A new company has been launched - Onward - to lead commercial advances of the technology.
