HONEY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANTIBIOTICS

• Scientists at Cardiff University in Wales are developing honey as an alternative medical treatment to antibiotics or antimicrobial drugs
• The scientists are also using honey to search for new drugs
• The reasons are compelling: honey goes back 8,000 years for use in healing wounds and it has antimicrobial qualities
• Using new technologies, researchers are tracing honey back to the specific plants that the bees pollinated to search for future medical remedies and new drugs
• The problem they're addressing is the rise in antibiotic resistant drugs and the need to find alternatives to fight disease
• More than 1.2 million people died from antibiotic resistant bacterial infections in 2019
• The Cardiff team is focusing on honey as an alternative antibacterial medication and other herbal and alternative remedies used by our ancestors to address and remedy the rising resistance of bacteria to current antibiotic medicine.

NEW FIREFIGHTING ROBOTS FOR WORST FIRE CONDITIONS

• Engineering students at the University of Texas Dallas have created a firefighting robot, designed to go into the worst firefighting conditions, in order to keep firemen out of harm's way
• The overall purpose is to save lives but also to revolutionize the way firefighters battle wildfires
• The robot is operated by remote control from a safe, remote location
• It can approach the fire, get a close-up look and spray fire retardant to suppress the flames
• For movement, it uses a foot pedal control system (invented by a UT grad) that allows it to be navigated in any direction, and at a distance, using a camera for guidance
• The robot will be going through rigorous testing and the material that it's composed of is so strong, it's being utilized as the basis for a fire-fighting tank.
