MEDICAL BREAKTHRU: AI BRAIN CHIPS RESTORE SPEECH
- Doctors at Stanford University using AI-enabled brain chips have performed a medical breakthrough: restoring the ability to speak in an ALS patient who lost that ability to the neurodegenerative disease 13 years ago
- Here are the facts:
- 68 year old Pat Bennett lost her ability to speak from ALS, the same disease that killed renowned scientist Stephen Hawking
- Doctors at Stanford University, as part of a clinical trial, implanted 4 small sensors with AI chips in her brain
- The AI chips allow her to communicate her thoughts directly from her mind onto a computer screen at 62 words per minute
- The new AI tech is 3xs faster than current technology
- It's called an intercortical brain computer interface
- This also took tremendous work on the part of the patient
- Pat Bennett partook in 26 sessions with an AI algorithm helping the AI to understand what brain activity on her part corresponded to words and phrases
- Every session she would try to communicate 260 to 480 sentences
- During 4 months, the patient helped the doctors and AI experts build a remarkable AI system that enables her to communicate once again and is expected to help many more patients of speech paralysis as a result of stroke and other conditions like ALS
- From the smile on Pat's face, she can see the joy that it brings to her and eventually to many others
- Bottomline: AI-powered brain implants, feared for the potential to alter personalities, have performed a medical miracle in restoring a person's ability to speak after so many years.
