  • New research finds that people 65 years and older are less likely to get dementia if they own a dog.  Here's what we know:
  • Japanese scientific research suggests having a dog reduces the risk of dementia in older adults by up to 40%
  • The dog can be of any breed
  • Part of the equation is that a dog increases the chances of the owner going outside and interacting, which exercises the brain
  • Owning a dog also contributes to daily physical activity, which helps lower the risk of dementia
  • Dementia and Alzheimer conditions are associated with a buildup of proteins in the brain, which exercise lessens
  • Just having a dog and not taking advantage of the potential of walks and the consequent social interactions will not protect against the disease
  • A recent study estimates that global dementia cases could triple by 2050, reaching more than 152 million.
