NASA'S SON OF CONCORDE - THE X-59
- NASA has unveiled a super-quiet, supersonic jet, the X-59 SST. Here's what we know:
- NASA is paving the way for the next-generation of supersonic passenger planes
- Working with Lockheed Martin, NASA's X-59 is designed to fly faster than the speed of sound quietly - with no sonic boom
- X-59 is now undergoing extensive integrated systems, engine and taxiing tests
- It will takeoff for its 1st flight later this year
- Top speed: 925 mph or Mach1.4
- It will cut flight times, like NYC to LA, in half
- NASA is targeting a maximum 75 decibel boom to clear approval by the FAA and other international aviation regulators
- X-59 is a very sleek plane - a design to cut the noise when the plane goes supersonic and breaks the sound barrier
- If all goes well, X-59 will be the first commercial supersonic passenger jet to fly since the Concorde was retired in 2003.
