- "Tipsy Astronauts" could be the global headline if the University of Melbourne and 4 other universities are successful in their space food project. Here's what we know:
- The University of Melbourne is working on a project to grow fresh food in outer space
- The goal is to be able to create food in outer space that isn't thermostabilized, served freeze-dried or irradiated
- Project's name: Australian Research Council Center of Excellence in Plants for Space
- The project uses open-source robotic farming machines, as well as:
- Digital Sensors
- AI and facial analysis to measure how food grows under certain conditions and how microgravity affects our experience in tasting it
- An important part of the project is zero gravity beer, which is being designed to be consumed in space
- Space beer will be made by fermenting yeast and carbonating it under zero gravity conditions
- A special straw has been developed to allow drinkers to taste the beer without it escaping into the atmosphere
- Success could be one small step for mankind and one giant leap for tailgating astronauts.
