BIG SOLAR POWER BREAKTHROUGH
Source: Oxford PV, Oxford
- An Oxford University spinoff company has created the world's most efficient solar panel. Here's what we know:
- British scientists just set the world record for solar panel efficiency at 25%
- Average commercial solar panel conversion rate is 16%
- Spinoff company is called Oxford PV
- They collaborated on this breakthrough with Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems
- They achieved 25% conversion efficiency, which is the percentage of solar energy hitting a solar panel converted into electricity
- Oxford PV believes they can reach 43%
- That would leave the theoretical limit of 30% in the dust
- Why is this important? It means cheaper, more efficient solar power and much more electricity from the same amount of solar panels resulting in faster and wider use of solar energy
- How did they achieve this breakthrough? Using perovskite-on-silicon tandem solar cells
- What's next? Oxford PV in 2024 is scaling up manufacturing and production of its tandem solar cell technology to ramp up its business.
THE FIRST JEEP EV
Source: Stellantis
- Jeep just announced its first electric vehicle and it's a battery powered Wagoneer - the Wagoneer S - available stateside this year. Here's what we know:
- Electric version of the Wagoneer is much sleeker than the gas-powered version
- Has razor-thin headlights
- Technology focused interior
- Has 4 screens: 2 touchscreens, a central control screen and one for the passengers to watch videos
- Has parent company Stellantis' BEV-specific powertrain that will produce 600 hp
- Accelerates 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds
- Will debut in fall 2024 with no price announced yet.
