Source: Stock
- British scientists have developed a potentially breakthrough cancer fighting vaccine that they believe may be effective in a wide variety of cancers. Here's what we know:
- It's a new mRNA cancer vaccine called mRNA-4359
- Contains mRNA like the Covid 19 vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna
- This is a therapeutic cancer vaccine that provides immunotherapy, meaning it trains the immune system to fight cancer cells
- According to the scientists, this could be the "dawn of a new age of treatments" for cancer
- This is very different from vaccines that prevent cancer
- Initially targeted to help patients with advanced melanoma, lung cancer and other solid tumor cancers
- 81-year-old cancer patient in the UK is the first to receive it
- Global trials in London, US, Spain and Australia are being run by the Imperial College Healthcare NHS to document safety and efficacy
- Trials being sponsored and the vaccine is being manufactured by Moderna
- Called a "ready-made" vaccine that can be used for any patient with particular types of cancer
- The British scientists believe it will be effective in fighting a wide variety of cancers.
