UK SCIENCE: INNOVATIVE, SCENT TRAINING FOR DOGS
Source: Brewster Kane & Winnie Kane
- My nephew dog Brewster and his St. Patty's Day cousin Winnie are all ears for this! UK scientists have discovered an innovative and more effective way to train your dog that helps make them better behaved. It's based on their sense of sniffing and their favorite treats. And you and I can do it at home. I've started the training on Win. Here are some key facts:
- It's called scent training
- The approach is simple: having the dog sniff out treats
- The scientists found that the sniffing and search build better cognitive skills in the dog
- The research team at Aberystwyth University in the UK also used the technique to stop and break bad behavior and help control the dog's impulses
- Works on dogs of all ages
- Works on untrained dogs
- Basic approach: Hide & seek with your dog's favorite treat, let the dog sniff it out and reward them with the treat
- The scientists found that dogs sniffing and working to find the treat increased their cognitive skills and they became more obedient as a result
- The scientists also like using toys with goodies inside that the dog has to figure out how to get the treat and also agility training as additional tools to help a dog be his or her best
- They say what is so compelling with scent training is that it works for all types and ages, even elderly dogs
- My Winnie is young - a couple of months shy of 2 yrs. old and she's responding to this
- The UK scientists are continuing to further research and refine their innovative approach to training your dog.
PERFECT BODY IN A PILL
- US scientists are one step closer to an exercise pill that provides all the benefits of exercise without moving a muscle. Here's what we know:
- New pill being developed by scientists at Washington University offers the same benefits as exercise, like weight loss, muscle growth and performance enhancement
- Called SLU-PP-332
- It mimics in the body a physical workout
- Activates specialized proteins called estrogen related receptors (ERRs) that are triggered by exercise
- The scientists say it could also prevent age-related problems like dementia and heart failure
- Works on obesity and muscular strength
- Has been successfully tested on lab animals
- The exercise pill details will be presented to the American Chemical Society this spring
- The promise: a pill that gets you into perfect shape like a daily run.
