  • Japan's new Maglev is the world's fastest bullet train with speeds up to 311 mph.  Here are some key facts:
  • Commuter travel will start in the next few years
  • Can travel 226 miles in 40 minutes
  • Called ChuoShenkansan
  • It's 100 mph faster than an F1 race car and 2 &1/2-times faster than a conventional train
  • Operator is Central Japan Railway Company
  • Almost 90% of travel is inside tunnels
  • The plan is trains composed of 16 cars capable of carrying 1,000 passengers
  • The system works on magnetic repulsion between the cars and tracks and the train literally floats in a process called magnetic levitation
  • The cars lift 4" off the ground which eliminates any friction
  • The technology is similar to Tesla's hyperloop
  • The ride is said to be exceptionally safe, punctual & smooth
  • Japan has a history of travel and bullet train technology breakthroughs, and their new Chuo Maglev is a record breaker.

  • On this Earth Day, it is sobering to consider how Climate Change is escalating episodes of extreme weather globally from the persistent twisters hitting the central and southern US to the flooding rains in Dubai and elsewhere. Now we learn that Google has innovated an AI weather model that forecasts faster, cheaper and more accurate weather forecasts than today's conventional models.  And it is particularly geared to extreme weather to expand warning times. Here are the facts:
  • Called GraphCast
  • Created by scientists at Google's DeepMind
  • Predicts weather 10 days in advance in less than a minute on a single desktop computer
  • Google says it offers unprecedented accuracy and speed
  • Doesn't need huge supercomputers and take hours
  • Beats world's top forecasting agencies
  • Particularly geared to forecasting extreme weather and outperforms current systems
  • Powered by generative AI
  • Experts say AI is now outperforming traditional weather forecasting systems which are physics-based; this new AI weather model from Google is a standout.
