SCIENCE IS CLOSE TO DECODING ORANGUTAN LANGUAGE
Source: Stock
- A spectrum of orangutan vocalizations has been discovered with the help of AI. Here's what we know:
- 1,033 distinct sounds have been found which orangutans use to communicate
- AI backed up the findings of scientists using only their ears and measurement tools
- Cornell University-led team recorded 117 long calls by 13 males of the Bornean orangutan species
- 46 acoustics measurements were used
- Long calls likely communicate complex messages
- Graduations of sounds across phrases were noted as well as precise modulation of voices
- Given the strides forward science is making with other animal languages such as that of whales and dogs, we seem to be getting closer to an ability to, as Dr. Doolittle put it, talk to the animals and understand their languages.
NEW SCIENCE: VEGETARIAN & VEGAN DIETS ARE BETTER FOR YOU
- If you wonder if you would be healthier going vegetarian or vegan, a comprehensive new global study of diets offers a resounding yes. Here are some key facts:
- This is a massive, global study of dietary data spanning 2000 to 2023 led by the University of Bologna
- Key findings:
- Plant-based diets rich in fruits, vegies, legumes and whole grain provide a protective shield in the body against cancers and heart disease
- Diets rich in processed meats and sugars are causing soaring increases in those illnesses
- Important results from vegetarian & vegan diets:
- Lower cholesterol and better lipid profile
- Lower inflammation and reduced body weight
- Significant reduction in blood pressure
- Reduced cancer risk
- Research will continue on the plant-based diet to find any nutritional deficiencies like the potential lack of vitamin B12 and Omega 3 fatty acids and how to compensate
- Usage of plant-based diets is on the rise and this new research gives substantial support to them.
