SELF-MEDICATING CHIMPANZEES LEAD SCIENTISTS TO MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR HUMANS
Source: Stock
- An Oxford University study indicates sick and injured chimpanzees self-medicate by eating medicinal plants and rubbing on their wounds. Here's what we know:
- Lab tests done on the chimps' medicinal plants indicate the vast majority of them are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
- Researchers say watching the chimps will help us discover new medicines of the future
- Scientists admit the chimps know the forest better than we do
- Apparently, the chimps know which plants help them get better
- In one study they tracked a chimp with an injured hand travel extensively to find and eat a fern, which turned out to be anti-inflammatory and reduced pain and swelling
- Scientists believe this high-level knowledge of medicinal plant benefits is socially learned and could lead to benefits for humans
- Soon we may be hearing..."Dr. Chimp will see you now."
