One of the World's Largest Floating, Hydro-Solar Energy Systems                                   Source:  Thailand's Electric Generation Authority Floating Renewable Energy on a Dam On a reservoir in northeast Thailand, nearly 145,000 solar panels are being installed to complete one of the world's largest floating hydro-solar hybrid energy systems on a reservoir/dam.  Backing it up are seven solar farms covering 300 acres of water.  Thailand has been criticized for its reliance on fossil fuels.  The government of Thailand is now changing the nation's energy mix.  The Thai government and the state run Electric Generation Authority are promising 8 more renewable energy dam projects over the next 16 years.  They will generate 2,725 megawatts of energy. Transitioning to Renewables Thailand has long relied on coal for its energy.  By 2037, it is targeting 35% of ...

Amtrak's New Acela 2 - US Fastest Train

Image
New Acela 2021                                                  Source:  Amtrak  Acela Speed Testing for 165 MPH America's fastest train, the Acela, is going to go faster.  It's being speed tested at a 30,000 acre facility near Pueblo, Colorado for its rollout in 2021.  The train will hit speeds of 165 mph in the Boston to Washington, DC corridor.  Amtrak is calling it "a gamechanger". The actual increase in speed is about 15%. More Energy Efficient The new Acela will use 20% less energy, carry 25% more passengers and cut 15 minutes off the train trip between Boston and Washington, DC which takes about 5 hours,  And, there is a lot of new technologies being incorporated into the Acela trains. US vs. Asia and Europe In terms of fast train technology, the US is behind both Europe and Asia.  The primary re...

Asia's Global Warming

Image
Big Ice Loss in Asian High Mountain Glaciers Source:  Stock photo of Siachen Glacier, Pakistan NASA-lead International Study High mountain glaciers in Asia are flowing much more slowly because of the widespread ice loss.  This is affecting the availability of freshwater downstream in China, Pakistan and India. University scientists from France, Scotland and California Institute of Technology joined NASA in this climate change study. Millions of Satellite Images Documenting Ice Loss The scientists analyzed more than 2 million images of the Asian glaciers taken by satellite from 1985 through 2017.  They found that 94% of the slowing water flow rates from the glaciers is caused by reductions in the thickness of the ice.  What they found surprising is the consistent relationship between the thinning glacier ice and the reduction in the water flow rate going downstream. Dramatic Satellite Evidence For more than 2 decades the scientists have been tracking by...

Maglev RR - Green, Clean, Fast, 600mph

Image
No Wheels, No Engine, No Noise, No Pollution, No Problem Maglev Train So Why Aren't They at a Train Station Near You? They're green, clean, fast, quiet.  No wheels, one track. Maglev stands for magnetic levitation.  They glide on a cushion of air.  Because of the way Maglev works, there's now little chance of derailment.  The higher the train gets from the track, the stronger the magnetic force pushing it back.  It's a greener transit solution.  One problem - they're very expensive. Magnetic Levitation Travel  The tech uses magnetic fields to lift the train a small distance above the track and make it move. It's much faster than a regular train.  A Maglev in Japan has broken a world record at 600 mph. A trip from Toronto to Vancouver is forecast to take 3 hours on Maglev by 2035. All Aboard in Asia Only a handful of commercially viable systems have been built.  Only 3 survive - all in Asia.  China likes the system so much i...
