The scientists say the process can complement life support systems in space habitats. Here's what we know: Fundamentally the breakthrough process captures light and transforms it into useful chemicals just as plants do Scientists behind the breakthrough are from the European Space Agency (ESA), University of Warwick and the Georgia Institute of Technology and it's part of their Humans on Mars initiative The primary source of energy is from the Sun Semiconductors are used to absorb energy much like chlorophyll in plants The solar energy is then converted to hydrogen, oxygen and other molecules, depending on the semiconductor The
