The Spirit of Innovation Successfully Flies                                                   Source: Rolls-Royce Jet Zero Emissions Flying Rolls-Royce has successfully flight tested an all-electric plane that recently completed its 15 minute maiden voyage.  The aircraft is called "The Spirit of Innovation" and it is a key piece of technology in Rolls-Royce's journey to "jet zero" otherwise known as zero emissions flying.  Global jet travel is one of the greatest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which is the primary cause of Climate Change.  The World Wildlife Federation claims that flying is the most polluting form of human activity.  It is becoming increasingly clear that electric aircraft are a critical weapon in global efforts to save the environment from the ravages of Climate Change. More Intensive Test...

Spirit of Innovation E-Plane Hopes to Set World Speed Record                              Source:  Rolls-Royce Spirit of Innovation Zero Emissions, Fast Flying UK based Rolls-Royce is determined to manufacture and fly the world's fastest electric plane.  It plans to test fly its prototype "Spirit of Innovation" in the spring of 2021. The electric plane is a small, propeller test aircraft powered by a powerful battery pack.  Spirit of Innovation has recently been tested for taxi-ing and accelerating on a runway at a test site in the UK.  The plane propelled itself forward with power from its highly advanced battery and propulsion system that is said to be groundbreaking electrical technology. The battery pack consists of 6,000 cells.  Rolls-Royce says that is the most energy dense battery pack ever integrated into an aircraft. Tech Specs The e-plane has a 400 kW electric p...

Electric Skies: Green Flyway for E-Planes

Norway & Sweden Create World's 1st Green Airspace  Source:  Sweden's Heart Aerospace Electric Plane ES-19 Source:  Rolls Royce Electric Plane Safe Airspace to Test Electric Planes Norway and Sweden have created a large, green airspace for the testing of electric planes and small to medium sized drones.  This is the world's first test airspace for electric flights. The airspace straddles the Norway-Sweden border over an area between Roros and Osterund.  It's large, rugged and challenging both from climate and terrain perspectives and includes mountains, lakes and forests.  It's specifically designed to be a place to test manned electric aircraft and unmanned, small to medium sized drones. Norway and Sweden Continue to Act for a Greener  Environment The green flyway is yet another world first example of Norway and Sweden's commitment to electric powered vehicles to reduce carbon emissions.  The green flyway provides an isolated s...

Rolls-Royce New Electric Plane

New Prototype Targeting Speed Records Source: Rolls-Royce The ACCEL Rolls-Royce has unveiled an electric plane prototype named ACCEL that it has big plans for this spring.  ACCEL has been going through testing and in the spring of 2020 Rolls-Royce will begin attempts to break the world speed record for electric aircraft.  The ACCEL (accelerate the electrification of flight) is capable of more than 300 miles per hour, according to Rolls-Royce.  The current record set by electric aircraft is 210 miles per hour.  With this prototype, the company's goal is to advance e-plane technology and set new records for performance and speed. Flying with Zero Emissions and the Densest Battery Pack ACCEL has the densest battery pack ever used in an electric aircraft.  It's able to travel 200 miles per charge.  There are three electric engines.  They produce a constant 500 horsepower.  Most importantly, the e-plane is quiet and has zero emissio...

The Rolls-Royce of Flying Cars

Rolls-Royce's Electric Flying Car Source:  Rolls-Royce Air Taxis Rolls-Royce is prototyping an all electric flying car.  It's an EVTOL or electric vertical take off and landing air taxi concept.  The vehicle could carry 5 passengers at speeds up to 250 mph for distances up to 500 miles.  The company promises to produce a vehicle prototype by mid 2020. Storied Jet Engine History Rolls-Royce says it intends to play a leading role in the big, emerging flying car market given their expertise in electric technologies and aviation. They're exploring a range of electric and hybrid personal air mobility systems. The British based company makes commercial jet engines.  Rolls Royce Motor Cars is now owned by BMW and is not associated with this effort. Technology The concept vehicle will be powered by 6 electric propellers with low noise levels.  To take off and land vertically, the wings will rotate 90 degrees.  When the vehicle reaches cruising a...
