D AILY INNOVATION BRIEF By Journalists Edward Kane & Maryanne Kane PARALYZED MAN WALKS AFTER 12 YEARS Source: Gert-Jan Oskam 40-year-old Gert-Jan Oskam of the Netherlands was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident & hasn't walked for 12 years until now Told by doctors that he would never walk again, an experimental program led by neuroscientists in Switzerland has proven the doctors wrong With stimulators implanted on his brain & spinal cord, when he thinks about walking, he can walk The medical innovation is that the implants re-established communications between the brain and the area of the spinal cord that controls walking The technology enables him to walk 100 to 200 meters - the length of 1 or 2 football fields Oskram commented that for 12 years he's been trying to get back up on his fee
