D AILY INNOVATION BRIEF                                                                                                          By Journalists Edward Kane & Maryanne Kane   GLOBAL WARMING WILL BREAK KEY THRESHOLD BY 2027 The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecasts that global temperatures will soar to record levels in the next 5 years and break & exceed the key climate threshold of 1.5C for the 1st time in world history WMO says that Earth is entering unchartered WX territory that will impact our health, food, environment and water security The group is sounding the alarm that the world will breach the threshold, (which underpins the Paris Agreement to bring down greenhouse gas emissions to drop global temperatures), temporarily and "with increasing frequency" The chance of exceeding the 1.5C limit has been increasing since 2015 The past 8 years have been setting new heat records and have been marked by extreme weather, drought and flooding This is a majo

US To Cut Emissions 50% by 2030

President Joe Biden Pledges Aggressive Action on Climate Change                                                                                                  Source:  The White House White House Virtual Climate Summit on Earth Day At the White House Virtual Climate Summit, President Joe Biden pledged to cut US greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.  The pledge will require massive changes and breakthrough renewable energy innovations for the US energy and transportation industries. President Biden says it is absolutely necessary and doable.  Biden made the pledge before more than 40 government leaders from around the world at his virtual, 2 day Leaders Summit on Climate, designed to demonstrate that the US is once again a strong force in the fight against Climate Change.  The previous Administration scoffed at Climate Change, withdrew from the Paris Accords and derailed efforts to fight global warming.  One of President Biden's first acts as President was to rejoin the Pari

Russia's Climate Change Meltdown

Permafrost is Thawing & No Longer Permanent Source:  Siberia's Permafrost Melt Disrupting Land Global Wake-Up Call Scientists are pointing out that the effects of global Climate Change are particularly evident in Russia, where 2/3rds of the land is permafrost.  But that is dramatically changing.  Global warming is savagely reducing the permafrost in Siberia, which is one of the coldest human habitats on Earth.  The permafrost is thawing away. Twice the Warming Siberia and the Arctic are warming at least twice as fast as the rest of the world.  Melting permafrost is causing severe flooding during springtime in Siberia.  It's changing and disrupting the landscape and in some cases destroying homes.  The permafrost melt is changing the habits of migratory animals and is threatening entire villages. Raging, Massive Forest Fires In the last several weeks, 8 million acres of forest in Siberia have been engulfed in massive fires.  The fires have been touched off b

UN Warns of Greenland Icemelt

Europe's Record Smashing Heat Threatens Greenland Ice Sheet Source:  NASA - Greenland Ice Sheet World's Second Largest Ice Sheet Melting Europe has been sweltering under a heat wave that has smashed temperature records.  The heat wave is now travelling toward Greenland.  The United Nations is warning that the world's second largest ice sheet is in the cross-hairs of extremely hot air and threatened. Smashing Ice The UN is warning that the hot air headed to Greenland is "absolutely incredible".  It's been moving up from North Africa this summer to Europe.  Temperatures in parts of Europe have hit record highs and surpassed them by 2, 3, 4 degrees Celsius, which is incredible.  That mass of hot air is now travelling northward to Greenland. Global Climate System The US is warning of high temperatures in Greenland and increased melting of the ice sheet.  They think it could result in record low ice levels, at or below levels set in 2012.  Greenland&#

Preventing West Antarctic Ice Shelf Meltdown Source:  West Antarctic Ice Sheet Novel Approach - Tons of Artificial Snow and Thousands of Wind Turbines A team of international scientists just released a study and a series of recommendations to prevent what would be a disastrous meltdown of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.  They recommend using 12,000 wind turbines to pump seawater up to the surface, convert it into artificial snow and let trillions of tons of the snow fall onto the surface of the ice sheet.  For a news blog with details on this novel approach, go to Important Innovations Collection: Preventing Antarctic Ice Shelf Meltdown : Dumping Trillions of Tons of Artificial Snow on the South Pole Ice Shelf Source:  West Antarctic Ice Shelf New Scientific Study &...

Asia's Global Warming

Image
Big Ice Loss in Asian High Mountain Glaciers Source:  Stock photo of Siachen Glacier, Pakistan NASA-lead International Study High mountain glaciers in Asia are flowing much more slowly because of the widespread ice loss.  This is affecting the availability of freshwater downstream in China, Pakistan and India. University scientists from France, Scotland and California Institute of Technology joined NASA in this climate change study. Millions of Satellite Images Documenting Ice Loss The scientists analyzed more than 2 million images of the Asian glaciers taken by satellite from 1985 through 2017.  They found that 94% of the slowing water flow rates from the glaciers is caused by reductions in the thickness of the ice.  What they found surprising is the consistent relationship between the thinning glacier ice and the reduction in the water flow rate going downstream. Dramatic Satellite Evidence For more than 2 decades the scientists have been tracking by satellite how the

Climate Change & Great Barrier Reef Update

New Findings:  Less Bleaching in 2017 But Uncertain Fate for Great Barrier Reef Source:  Australia - Great Barrier Reef Experts Call for Urgent Action on Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Save Global Coral Reefs Global warming continues to escalate and the future of the world's coral reefs remain uncertain.  In fact, experts in Australia and at NOAA are urging immediate action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to save coral reefs, including the world's largest, the Great Barrier Reef.  Their request for urgent action is a result of their scientific research findings, released today. ARC & NOAA Scientists The new research findings have just been released by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies in Australia and NOAA scientists.  They found that the Great Barrier Reef endured extreme temperatures a little better in 2017 than it did during the two previous years of coral bleaching.  Their findings were published today in Nature Climate Change. Global Warming's New Ocean at North Pole

Image
North Pole Battle Zone It sits on the top of the world at the North Pole.  It's a brand new ocean that's just been discovered. It's the result of global warming.  Over the past 30 years, the Artic has melted 2 times as fast as the rest of the world.  And the melting caused by Climate Change has spawned a new ocean.  And, so quickly, it's the object of international battles for ownership and oil, gas and mineral development. Investment and Development Rights Battle 5 Artic nations are fighting for ownership. The stakes are huge.  As much as 90 billion gallons of oil and 47 trilllion cubic meters of natural gas are at stake, according to the Royal Institute of International Affairs.  Plus, there's a trillion dollars worth of minerals like gold, platinum and titanium. The technological and infrastructure investment to explore and develop the polar ocean is massive. Global Warming Has Opened Access Incredibly, global warming has opened access to this hidden o
