CC Is Undermining 90% of Marine Species - New Study

Image
Startling Impact of Climate Change on Marine Life                                                     Source: Stock Images Devastating Impact of Greenhouse Gas Emissions on Global Maritime Environment The fate of nearly all marine species - up to 90% - could be at a high or critical risk of extinction by the end of the century unless the rate of greenhouse gas emissions is reduced.  If greenhouse gas emissions remain unchanged, the impact on marine life, marine ecosystems and the global environment will be catastrophic.  The startling threat that Climate Change is now having on 25,000 marine species has just been documented in a new scientific study and published in the publication "Nature Climate Change".  Bottomline:  if the world continues with "business as usual" with greenhouse gas emissions, 90% of all...

Triton's New Underwater Adventure Vehicle

Ocean Monitoring by Jellyfish

US Scientists Enable Jellyfish to Swim 3-times Faster Source:  Caltech New Invention with Big Potential to Monitor Health of Oceans Scientists at Stanford University and Caltech have created a pacemaker-like device that enables natural jellyfish to swim three times their normal speed.  The microelectronic, pulsing, tiny, prosthetic device generates electric jolts that make the fish triple their speed while using just twice as much energy.  The scientists and engineers involved in the project says the device causes no additional stress to the sea creatures.  They say the potential for this system is as vast as the ocean itself. Network of Live Ocean Monitors The scientific team says the combination of speed and energy efficiency from this device opens the possibility of using jellyfish to gather data from across the world's oceans. They envision equipping the jellyfish with sensors to track ocean temperatures, salinity and oxygen levels.  ...

Ocean Innovation Investing Opportunities

Blue Innovation From the Commonwealth Nations Source:  Secretary General's Paper on  Blue Ocean Initiative Commonwealth Blue Charter The Secretary General of the Commonwealth nations Patricia Scotland just laid out what she sees as new opportunities to invest in the emerging Blue Ocean Economy.  She notes that 95% of the world's oceans are still unexplored.  The value of global ocean assets is conservatively valued at $24 Trillion and the global ocean economy is worth $2.5 Trillion a year, according to experts cited by Secretary General Scotland. There is a series of investment opportunity ideas that the 53 Commonwealth nations have signed on to in their new Commonwealth Blue Charter. The Commonwealth nations that span the UK to Canada, Kenya, India and Australia include 1/3rd of all world coastal waters and 42% of all coral reefs within their jurisdictions.  Their commitment to the Blue Ocean Charter has the potential of a big impact. ...

Underwater Internet of Things

MIT's Underwater Sensor Network to Take the Ocean's Pulse Source:  MIT Powered Solely by Sound Waves To investigate the vast unexplored areas of the oceans, MIT engineers are building a submerged network of interconnected sensors that send data to the surface.  It's an underwater internet of things to monitor temperature changes from climate change, ocean pollution and marine life over long time periods.  The MIT team has invented a battery-free sensor, powered by sound waves. The device can monitor the ocean environment at great depths over long periods of time with no battery.  The submerged system uses the vibration of piezoelectric materials to generate power and send and receive data. Underwater Communications System This MIT invention appears to be a major breakthrough.  Up until now, the difficulty of deploying deep water sensors to study ocean conditions has been greatly limited by their battery life.  It's very difficult to change batter...

World Economic Forum Innovation Winner Evoware of Indonesia & Its Seaweed Bioplastics Global Bioplastics Contender from Seaweed Evoware, an Indonesia-based company, makes edible bioplastics from seaweed for use as food wrappings and packets.  Their nature based innovation in bioplastics landed them as a top winner in the World Economic Forum's Global Design Challenge to rid the world of plastic throwaways that are jeopardizing our oceans and environment.  Here's a look at what a common natural substance like seaweed can do to make an environmental difference. Bioplastics that Are Edible, Biodegradable & a Lot More This is an edible alternative to commonly used multi-layered plastic wrappings.  It's directly manufactured from plant material making it edible and nutritious.  According to the New Plastics Economy, an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, you can eat your burger with this wrapping or dissolve your coffee packet in hot water and...
